A Living Shoreline, 2022-24
A Living Shoreline is my collaborative work with the Studio for Urban Projects and the Estuary & Ocean Science Center in Tiburon in an effort to create a new modular reef architecture design for oyster habitat that can reduce wave energy from intensified storm surges due to sea level rise / climate change.
The design is intentionally small and modular, allowing them to be created and deployed by small community groups – very different from current models that need heavy machinery to be deployed.
The reef architectures are currently in their fourth year of being tested in Tiburon, Sausalito, and San Rafael, CA. I was part of the Studio for Urban Projects team working on prototyping, casting, mold making and deployment. In addition, I documented the work and made a short film about the project that premiered at the International Ocean Film Festival in 2024.
